Programs
The areas of major focus for SACSS are (a) healthcare access, awareness and advocacy (b) parents, children and families (c) mental health (d) English classes and basic computer skills training. All our programs focus on and assist our clients with various needs in these areas, through direct services as well as referrals. We also advocate with elected officials on behalf of our community. All of our programs and services are free and are provided by culturally competent staff members who speak Hindi/Urdu, Punjabi, Gujarati, and Bengali.
CHA - Community Health Advocates
This program provides assistance to individual clients and families in accessing healthcare coverage, both private and public, such as Medicaid, Child Health Plus, Family Health Plus, and Medicare. We also provide assistance with solving any problems you may have with your health care coverage. We hold workshops to assist our community in understanding the new healthcare reform and how they can benefit from it.
Immigrant Health Care Access and Advocacy Collaborative
We are an active member of New York Immigration Coalition's (NYIC) collaborative of various New York nonprofits working with immigrant communities. The Collaborative assists us in helping immigrants access healthcare services in New York by sharing resources and knowledge. This collaboration also helps us advocate at city and state levels for the needs of the low-income immigrant South Asian population.
Preventive Services for Children and Families
SACSS, in collaboration with Safe Space has a Preventive Services contract with the NYC Administration for Children Services. SACSS strives to prevent the removal of children into foster care by providing individual and group counseling and case management to entire families.
PEP (Parents Empowerment Program)
This is a series of workshops that is held at faith based and community centres, public schools and libraries to empower underserved South Asian parents to ensure their children's success. Experts present at the workshops provide opportunity for one-on-one counselling. Workshops are presented in the native language of participants with special focus on the public school system, effective communication with children, positive reinforcement, health and nutrition, financial preparedness, awareness of banking and credit systems, and internet safety.
