SUMMARY:Combating the Global Backlash against Women: Key Strategies for Full Participation in Public Life
DESCRIPTION:Panel discussion presented by All India Women’s Conference (AIWC)\, NGO Committee on Human Rights\, and South Asian Council for Social Services (SACSS). \nIn early 2025\, UN Women stated that 24% of countries have reported a significant backlash against gender equality that has undermined efforts to ensure equality\, rights\, and protection for all women and girls. This trend has adversely impacted women’s full participation in the public domain. Women’s leadership in political decision-making processes improves outcomes for whole communities. Unfortunately\, worldwide\, women are underrepresented at all levels of decision-making\, and gender parity in political life appears to be a distant dream. This panel will examine the ways in which the global backlash against women’s rights has contributed to silencing women’s voices in public life and recommend solutions at the local\, national\, and policy level. \nThursday\, March 12th\, 2026\n8:30 AM – Eastern Daylight Time\nNew York\nRegister below:\nClick here to register\nPROGRAM\nWelcome and Introduction – Sudha Acharya – Executive Director\, SACSS\, Principal Representative to the UN\, AIWC \nModerator – Navina Sitaram – Representative to the UN\, AIWC \nPANELISTS\nDr. Roberta Nassar – Chair\, NGO Committee on Human Rights\, NY & Representative to the UN\, IFS\nKuljit Kaur – President\, All India Women’s Conference (AIWC)\nProf. (Dr.) Jameela Begum – Prof. of English\, Director\, Cultural & Literary Forum\, AIWC Trivandrum\nLiya Thachil – Executive Director\, New York State APA Task Force \nWrap Up & Closing Remarks\nUsha Nair – All India Women’s Conference (AIWC)\n \n\n

SUMMARY:SACSS Celebrates 25 Years of Service with a Spectacular Anniversary Gala
DESCRIPTION:This year marked a significant milestone for the South Asian Council for Social Services (SACSS) — 25 years of unwavering service\, advocacy\, and growth within our diverse communities. To commemorate this incredible journey\, we hosted a vibrant and heartfelt anniversary gala\, bringing together longtime supporters\, community members\, and partners who have helped shape our mission. \nThe evening was gracefully emceed by CBS News correspondent Shanelle Kaul\, whose warmth and poise set the perfect tone for the celebration. \n \nCBS Correspondent Shanelle Kaul\, Emcee of the SACSS 25th Anniversary Gala \nShanelle introduced Board President Devi Ramchandran\, who addressed the audience with heartfelt words\, “SACSS is a bridge that spans generations and builds lifelines for our clients.” \n \nDevi Ramchandran – SACSS Board President \nHer remarks were followed by a moving video that captured the story of SACSS’s journey — 25 years of service\, impact\, and community resilience. \n\n \n \n\nVideo chronicling 25 years of SACSS’s impact \nDevi then introduced Executive Director Sudha Acharya\, who was greeted with a powerful standing ovation\, a true testament to her decades of leadership and service. \n \nSudha Acharya\, Founder & Executive Director\, SACSS \nDevi then introduced Founder and Executive Director Sudha Acharya\, who was greeted with a powerful standing ovation\, a true testament to her decades of leadership and service. \nSudha began by reflecting on SACSS’s origins: “Back in 2000\, we started SACSS with little more than purpose and passion.” \nFrom those modest beginnings\, she recounted how the organization grew by program\, family by family\, need by need into a trusted cornerstone of the community\, delivering essential services\, advocacy\, and support across generations. \nBut her message wasn’t just one of celebration. “But tonight is not just about celebration. It’s about commitment. We cannot let this progress unravel. We can’t only look at tomorrow\, we must plan for the next 25 years.” \nAs she expressed gratitude to the individuals and organizations who made this milestone possible\, she also ensured to convey the importance of sustainability. “As we mark this milestone\, let us also recommit ourselves to service\, to community\, and to the vision of a more just\, more compassionate future\,” she urged. \n“Here’s to the past 25 years—and to the next\,” she said. \nMoumita Rahman\, keynote speaker and one of NYC’s leading immigration attorneys\, moved everyone by sharing her immigrant story\, one that echoed the journeys of many in our community and reminded us why the work of SACSS remains as urgent as ever. \n \nKeynote speaker for the night\, Attorney Moumita Rahman \nA highlight of the evening was the presentation of the SACSS Lifetime Achievement Award. Actor and comedian Aasif Mandvi took the stage to introduce the honoree — his former co-star and legendary figure Madhur Jaffrey. With charm and humor\, he celebrated her lasting impact as a cultural icon and culinary pioneer. Although unable to attend in person\, Madhur sent a moving message\, describing the food SACSS provides through its pantry as “mother\, father\, grandfather\, grandmother\, family\, ancestry\, home — everything all rolled into one.” \nIn a joyful twist\, Aasif was himself surprised with the “Humor for Health” Award\, presented by Aroon Shivdasani\, Founding Member and Executive Director of the Indo-American Arts Council\, recognizing his contributions to community well-being through laughter and storytelling. \n \nAroon Shivdasani and Actor & Author Aasif Mandvi \nA heartfelt moment of the evening honored the intergenerational impact of the Ramesh & Kalpana Bhatia Family Foundation. Kalpana Bhatia received the Legacy of Generosity Award\, presented by Mukund Padmanabhan\, Founder and President of Guru Krupa Foundation\, in recognition of her decades of quiet yet powerful support for causes ranging from gender-based violence to education. “She has supported organizations… for longer than I even realized\,” said her daughter Anita Bhatia in a moving tribute. \nAnita was presented by Council Member Sandra Ung with the Changemaker Award for advancing healthcare\, welfare\, and education through the Foundation. Together\, the Bhatias embody a legacy of compassion\, purpose\, and lasting community impact. \n \nAnita Bhatia\, Executive Director\, Ramesh & Kalpana Bhatia Foundation and Kalpana Bhatia\, Co-Founder\, Ramesh & Kalpana Bhatia Foundation \nGrammy-winning artist\, Chandrika Tandon was honored with the Music for Healing Award\, presented by Councilmember Shekar Krishnan and Binayak Shrestha\, Global Head of Services Delivery at GEP\, recognizing her deep connection to SACSS’s senior programs and her belief in the power of music as care. In a magical moment\, she did an impromptu performance\, inviting the audience to sing along\, truly embodying her words “Music is love\, and music ignites the light in us.” \n \nGrammy winner Chandrika Tandon accepting the Music for Healing Award \nProfessor of Social Work and human rights activist\, Dr. Roberta Nassar was honored with the Championing Mental Health Award presented by Councilmember Linda Lee\, for her tireless work overseeing and advancing SACSS’s mental health services. She has shaped a trauma-informed\, culturally sensitive approach to care that reaches hundreds of clients\, many seeking mental health support for the first time. \n \nCouncil Member Linda Lee (left) presenting the Championing Mental Health Award to Dr. Roberta Nassar (right) \nProducer\, Television Host\, and Author Padma Lakshmi received the Voices of Heritage Award presented by Chef Vijay Kumar\, Executive chef and co-owner of Michelin-starred restaurant Semma\, and Barkha Cardoz\, culinary entrepreneur. Their conversation delved into themes from Prabal’s book Walk Like a Girl. “When someone said ‘walk like a girl\,’ I didn’t realize it was meant as an insult — because I was raised by powerful women\,” he said. \n \nFireside chat between CEO Anjula Acharia (left) and fashion designer Prabal Gurung (right) \nQueens Delegation of NYC Council Members Sandra Ung\, Shekar Krishnan\, and Linda Lee presented a NYC Council Proclamation to Executive Director Sudha Acharya\, recognizing SACSS’s decades of service. With warmth and energy\, they brought attention to the core programs SACSS delivers — healthcare\, food security\, workforce development\, and senior support — while connecting with attendees one-on-one. Their efforts highlighted how every donor has a story\, just like every client. It’s these shared stories that make our work possible. \n \n(Left image) SACSS Board member Malavika Khullar\, (right image) restauranteur Roni Mazumdar. \nGovernor Kathy Hochul was represented by Deputy Director of Asian Affairs\, Sibu Nair who presented a bouquet to Sonia Gawas\, a former SACSS client and now a Council Member in West Windsor\, whose journey reflects the deep resilience and strength within our community. Sonia first came to SACSS in the aftermath of 9/11\, seeking support during an uncertain and difficult time. Over the years\, she transformed her own hardship into public service\, becoming a powerful advocate for others. \n \nDeputy Director of Asian Affairs\, Sibu Nair (left) with Council Member and former SACSS client\, Sonia Gawas (right) \nTo close the night\, we hosted a fashion show in honor of AAPI Heritage Month featuring Asian fusion designs by Stitch with SACSS graduates\, modeled by the talented women of the Reba Browne Dance Company. \n \nSACSS’ AAPI Heritage Month Fashion Show\, stitched by Stitch with SACSS graduates. \nThe celebration concluded with a spirited musical performance by Kunal\, featuring beloved Bollywood songs from across eight decades. SUMMARY:Bolstering the Front Line: Grass Roots Organizations’ role in Women’s Economic Empowerment
DESCRIPTION:Panel discussion presented by All India Women’s Conference (AIWC)\, the NGO Committee on Human Rights\, NY\, the International Federation of Settlements and Neighborhood Centers (IFS) and South Asian Council for Social Services (SACSS). \nWomen worldwide are the poorest of the poor. They are less likely to participate in the paid labor market\, more likely to be unemployed and are paid significantly less than men. All these challenges have led to a feminization of poverty that can only be tackled by strengthening social protection systems and infrastructure at the grass roots level. Grass roots women’s organizations have long been at the forefront of empowering women economically during ordinary times as well as during times of war and in the recent global pandemic. Literacy and vocational training in different fields\, computer training\, higher studies\, socioeconomic projects\, legal literacy\, and financial literacy all work in conjunction to eliminate poverty and nurture women’s leadership. This webinar will explore best practices and programs at the grass roots level and recommend solutions for realizing the economic empowerment of women. \nWednesday\, March 13th\, 2024\n8:30 AM Eastern Daylight Time (New York)\nPROGRAM\nWelcome – Kalyani Raj – President\, AIWC \nGreetings – Dr. Roberta Nassar – Chair\, NGO Committee on Human Rights\, NY and Representative to the UN(IFS)\nGreetings – Sudha Acharya – Executive Director\, SACSS\, Principal Representative to the UN(AIWC) \nModerator – Dr. Manju Kak – Secretary General\, AIWC \nIntroduction of Speakers – Shevata Rai Talwar – Joint Secretary\, AIWC \n \nSPEAKERS \nDr. Medha Puran Samant – Chairperson & Managing Director\, Annapurna Pariwar\nEla Gandhi – Chairperson\, Phoenix Settlement Trust\, and Gandhi Development Trust\nKuljit Kaur – Member in Charge AIWC – Presentation on AIWC Activities\nJunias M Kanyinda – Communications Officer\, IFS\nMary Archana Fernandez – Director\, Family Support Services\, SACSS \nNidhi Ashok Goyal – Founder and Executive Director\, Rising Flame \n \nSUMMATION\nNavina Sitaram – Representative to the UN\, AIWC \nAUDIENCE QUESTIONS \nDr. Manju Kak – Secretary General\, AIWC \nVOTE OF THANKS \nDr. Upasana Singh – Treasurer\, AIWC.\n \n  \nClick here to register\n  \n\n \n

She also explained the warning signs of an ischemic stroke\, which occurs when a blood clot blocks or plugs an artery leading to the brain. \n \nDuring the Q&A segment\, community members were engaged in a conversation with Dr. Shina about how to manage high blood pressure\, and what changes they can make in their diet. \nAccording to Dr. Shina\, heart disease is the number one leading cause of deaths in the United States. \n \n“It’s prevalent in people who are 65 years and older\, and it’s more prevalent in people of color such as Blacks and Latinos who are very predisposed\,” Dr. Shina said. “In our South Asian community\, we see a lot of people with heart disease as well\, and we have done some education for Chinese communities and now Indian communities.” \nThank you to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital and Dr. Shina for helping our communities better understand and recognize the importance of living a healthy lifestyle that can reverse the effects of illness\, and promote positive outcomes in our physical and mental health.

SUMMARY:Stitch With SACSS Graduation Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:It was a wonderful day on Wednesday\, September 9th as SACSS hosted its first graduation ceremony for 10 participants in the ‘Stitch With SACSS’ Program that teaches immigrant women the skill of sewing while gaining financial independence. \nSACSS Executive Director Sudha Acharya was joined by City Councilmember Sandra Ung and Congresswoman Grace Meng’s Community Liaison Kyle Salcido to present certificates to each woman in recognition of their accomplishment. Upon completion of the program\, SACSS gifted each student a sewing machine in support of starting their own home-based sewing business. \nThe students’ colorful garments – shirts\, blouses\, pants\, handbags\, aprons and baby clothes – were displayed in the SACSS Senior Center\, where everyone gathered for the ceremony. \nIn her remarks\, Ung congratulated the class and thanked SACSS for establishing a program that gives women economic empowerment and the confidence to start their own small business. \n“Meeting all of you and seeing how you’re going to open your own business\, I am really inspired by that\, and I want to wish everyone the best of luck\,” Ung said. \nStudents Parvin Akter and Nagina Rehimi thanked SACSS for supporting them. \n“Learning how to sew scared me so bad\, but now I feel so confident\,” said Parvin Akter. “I understand the fabrics\, the difference between threads\, and learned how to work a sewing machine. I’m so happy and will start my own business.” \n“I’m very happy and very fortunate that I got to participate in Stitch With SACSS\, make loving friends and learn from the kindest teachers\, Manjulaben and Rema. I’m also excited to start my new business\,” said Nagina Rehimi. \nLaunched in July 2023\, the SACSS Women’s Economic Independence Program\, Stitch With SACSS\, is a four-day 10-week program teaching immigrant women\, including those from South Asian and AAPI communities\, the necessary skills of sewing\, pattern making\, fabric cutting\, garment construction\, and alterations. \nThe program is coordinated by Rema Venu and is taught by Manjulaben Darji\, who said: \n“They started with cotton and doing simple stitches\, such as how to make a straight line and thread a needle in the sewing machine. They made drawstring bags\, a handbag\, aprons\, and learned how to sew on a pocket\, and the culmination of it was to stitch a blouse with lining — that was the finale. It was a long journey and there were several layers to it\,” Venu said. “I’m very proud of them. This is our first program and we had to see how to teach effectively\, and how all of the students were doing so we don’t leave anyone behind.” \nWhile this is her first time teaching a class\, Darji said she is looking forward to welcoming the next ‘Stitch With SACSS’ cohort of students beginning Monday\, Oct. 2.

SUMMARY:Empowering Girls through Digital Education: Reaching All those Left Behind
DESCRIPTION:In honor of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month\, SACSS is co-sponsoring a CSW 2023 Parallel Event on Empowering Girls through Digital Education titled “Reaching All Those Left Behind!” \nSACSS Executive Director and AIWC Principal Representative to the UN\, Sudha Acharya\, will be participating in this important event\, which will examine the troubling impact of the digital literacy gap on the empowerment and future prospects of girls. Panelists will also explore solutions for reaching the most vulnerable girls currently left behind by the Digital Divide. According to the UNGEI “A generation of girls risks being left outside the labor force or trapped in vulnerable or low-quality employment\, due to a lack of skills\, absence of quality jobs\, and gendered expectations of their roles as caregivers.” With digital education being a prerequisite for success in the workplace\, it will be critical to bridge the digital gender gap and ensure that all girls receive the training and skills they need to succeed. This webinar\, presented by All India Women’s Conference (AIWC)\, the NGO Committee on Human Rights\, NY\, the International Federation of Settlements and Neighborhood Centers (IFS) and South Asian Council for Social Services (SACSS) will examine the troubling impact of the digital literacy gap on the empowerment and future prospects of girls and explore solutions for reaching the most vulnerable girls who are currently being left behind. This is a virtual event open to anyone\, anywhere in the world. \nMonday\, March 13th \n9:00 AM to 11:00 AM Eastern  Daylight Time (New York) \nClick here to register\nRegistration link: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_k6lWrOxtRIWUPdgmu5dsJg \nTo Know more click here \n

SUMMARY:SACSS partners with Korean-American CBOs to provide Covid 19 awareness and testing\, healthcare access assistance\, and free Hep B screening events for Korean-speaking community members
DESCRIPTION:On September 21st\, SACSS hosted a Korean language COVID 19 awareness and testing kit distribution event with the MinKwon Center. On the same day and also for our Korean-speaking community members\, SACCS held a healthcare access assistance session with NY Cares and other health insurance options providers from 9:30am-12pm. \nThe next day\, September 22\, SACSS partnered with Korean Community Services NY to offer free screening for Hepatitis B in addition to a NY Cares enrollment event. \nSACCS was so pleased to partner with these wonderful Korean American community-based organizations in order to provide these Korean-language health access and support services\, as we all know how important it is to have information available for community members in their mother tongue\, especially the elderly and newly-arrived immigrants.  \nThese were free\, walk-in events and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Seniors learn the craft of soap making at SACSS Senior Center
DESCRIPTION:This September\, one of the activities our seniors enjoyed at the SACSS Seniors Center was soapmaking! On September 1st\, SACSS invited a local volunteer craftsperson to teach our seniors the art of soapmaking. Soap making is a fun craft that’s easy to master\, and like any other craft\, it is not just good mental and physical exercise\, it is therapeutic in that it helps people practice attention to detail and unleash creative skills!  \nThe creative session was so much fun and our seniors were pretty excited to create something that they could actually take home and use!  \n
