NY-Presbyterian Queens Hospital leads presentation on cardiovascular health and stroke to SACSS seniors
February is Heart Health Month, and at SACSS, we had Dr. Simradeep Shina from NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital speak on this critical topic about cardiovascular health and stroke to our attentive seniors.
Dr. Shina’s presentation on cardiovascular health and stroke, provided educational information on how to prevent and control high blood pressure, such as limiting salt (sodium) intake, drinking more water and avoiding sugary drinks, getting exercise, and eating a healthy, balanced diet with lots of vegetables and fruit. She also explained the warning signs of an ischemic stroke, which occurs when a blood clot blocks or plugs an artery leading to the brain.
During the Q&A segment, community members were engaged in a conversation with Dr. Shina about how to manage high blood pressure, and what changes they can make in their diet.
According to Dr. Shina, heart disease is the number one leading cause of deaths in the United States.
“It’s prevalent in people who are 65 years and older, and it’s more prevalent in people of color such as Blacks and Latinos who are very predisposed,” Dr. Shina said. “In our South Asian community, we see a lot of people with heart disease as well, and we have done some education for Chinese communities and now Indian communities.”
Thank you to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital and Dr. Shina for helping our communities better understand and recognize the importance of living a healthy lifestyle that can reverse the effects of illness, and promote positive outcomes in our physical and mental health.
