A trip to Museum of Moving Image

A trip to Museum of Moving Image

This summer, our Youth Leadership Program had an exciting field trip to the Museum of the Moving Image. Our current batch of seven bright and curious kids, coming from diverse backgrounds, were led by the Senior Program Manager of Family Support Services, Nushmia Shafique, and joined by our star volunteer Jamie Li Damonti.

The day began at the SACSS office, where the group gathered before heading out. But first came pizza. Over lunch, Nushmia introduced the students to a special clue hunt they would take on inside the museum. Each question of the quiz was connected to a different section of the museum, encouraging the kids to not only explore but also to interact with each other and the exhibits in new ways.

Filled with curiosity and excitement, the group entered the museum and began discovering the history of the visual world. One highlight was the Mission Impossible exhibition, which revealed the intense production process behind the iconic film series. One student, who especially loves the famous bike stunt, was thrilled to see how the ramp was built for Tom Cruise’s daring mountain jump.

Another favorite was the timeline of camera advancements. The kids marveled at how far technology has come, from the bulky earliest cameras to the sleek modern ones. Thanks to the quiz, they even discovered that the oldest camera on display was the Camera Lucida from 1806.

After an afternoon filled with discovery, laughter, and plenty of running around to solve quiz questions, the group ended the trip on a sweet note with ice cream to beat the summer heat.

It was a memorable day of learning, teamwork, and fun that brought history to life and gave our young leaders a chance to explore the magic behind the movies.
