SACSS Seniors Celebrate a Year of Creativity Through SU-CASA
The SACSS Senior Center recently celebrated the conclusion of another creative season with an exhibition showcasing the incredible talents of its seniors. Participants wrapped up their painting and music classes with an afternoon of art and performances that reflected months of creativity, learning, and dedication.

Led by art instructor Erica Purnell and music instructor Sanchez Fernandes through the New York City Council’s SU-CASA initiative, in partnership with the Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, the program gave seniors the opportunity to explore new artistic skills while building confidence and forming meaningful connections with one another.

The art exhibition featured paintings created throughout the year, each reflecting the seniors’ creativity and growth. Participants experimented with different artistic styles, drawing inspiration from renowned artists such as Jackson Pollock and Frida Kahlo, while also creating their own interpretations of landscapes, sunsets, and other scenes.

The celebration continued with musical performances that were filled with joy and nostalgia. Seniors sang songs that reminded them of their younger years, including songs in their native languages. Having an instructor who speaks their language created a welcoming environment where participants felt comfortable performing and expressing themselves. Their enthusiasm and willingness to embrace new experiences were evident throughout the afternoon.

SACSS is grateful to Councilmember Sandra Ung for supporting these programs through the New York City Council’s SU-CASA initiative. Opportunities like these allow older adults to stay active, express themselves creatively, and continue learning in a supportive community where they feel seen, heard, and valued.
