Self-Defense Workshop Equips Members with Vital Skills

This month, we organized a community safety training workshop in collaboration with the Asian American Federation (AAF) to teach community members basic self-defense skills through the art of Jujitsu.

These trainings were provided as part of AAF’s Hope Against Hate Campaign, of which SACSS is a community partner. Through these training sessions, community members can learn hands-on techniques like the ones shown here to help protect their neighbors and loved ones—our participants say they’ve learned how to be better upstanders at our trainings. After these sessions, community members can sign up to be a Community Companion and volunteer in Asian neighborhoods throughout NYC!

This workshop, which featured martial arts instructor Andre Maldonado, was divided into three sessions and conducted in English, Urdu, Hindi, Mandarin, and Cantonese.

These workshops aimed to teach community members basic self-defense techniques to protect themselves in threatening situations, whether walking on the streets or taking public transportation.

SACSS thanks Andre for his time, patience, and dedication to teaching our community members how to defend themselves and stay vigilant in their surroundings. His contribution is invaluable and greatly appreciated!
